How Smartblock Works

Smartblock is a specially designed Faraday Cage that fits neatly over all smart meters installed across Australia. By surrounding the meter with this shielding technology, Smartblock dramatically reduces the high levels of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted, while still allowing your meter to communicate seamlessly with the grid.

Why It Matters

In Australia, most meter boxes are located at the front of the home, often on the bedroom or lounge-room wall. That means families are frequently exposed to emissions where they rest and spend the most time.

The World Health Organisation’s guideline for safe EMR levels is 612 mV/m². Smart meters, however, can emit up to three times this level. With Smartblock in place, those levels can drop by up to 99% from around 2000 mV/m² down to under 10 mV/m².

This reduction is enough to significantly limit harmful exposure, while still allowing your energy usage data to be transmitted to the grid in real time.

The Science Behind It

Smartblock works by using the proven principles of a Faraday Cage. The fine mesh of conductive material disrupts and redistributes electrical fields, effectively neutralising EMR inside the cage. In simple terms:

• Without protection: Radiation from the smart meter’s front glass panel radiates outward, travelling back into the home.
  
• With Smartblock: The parallel lines of the cage “scramble” the signal, blocking the harmful radiation and keeping it outside your living space.
  

What is a Faraday Cage?

The concept dates back to Michael Faraday in 1836, who discovered that electric charges remain on the surface of a conductive enclosure, leaving the inside shielded. His experiments proved that anything placed inside such a structure would be protected from external electric fields. Smartblock applies this same timeless principle to modern smart meters.

Do You Need Extra Shielding?

One of the most common questions we get is whether Smartblock needs shielding at the back. The answer: no. Both the meter box and the smart meter are already grounded, meaning the EMR is contained within the cage.

Smartblock doesn’t overheat, doesn’t interfere with your power, and requires no additional shielding such as lead paint or fabric—though some customers choose to add them for extra peace of mind. Importantly, Smartblock is a once-off purchase that lasts for life. You won’t need costly alternatives like relocating your meter box or paying annual fees to keep an analogue meter.

Step 1: Check your smart meter to confirm if it's single-phase or three-phase.

Dimensions:

• Single Phase (1P) - Length 25cm x Width 16cm x Depth 12cm

Step 2: Check Installation Requirements
Smartblock Smart Meter Faraday Cages are designed for easy self-installation. Ensure there's at least a 7mm gap around your smart meter to fit the cage.

Step 3: Purchase Your Smartblock
Order your Smartblock directly from Earthing Oz.

Step 4: Confirm Your Smart Meter with a Photo
After your purchase, you'll receive instructions to send a photo of your smart meter to hello@earthingoz.com.au to confirm its size. Once received, production of your custom Smartblock will begin. Please allow approximately 2 to 3 weeks for manufacturing.
